چکیده

Three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology currently is used by various commercial industries as a method for analyzing objects and shapes. Recent work from our group and others offer data to support the use of 3D imaging as a valuable tool in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery. We have developed a system for creating 3D breast models that provides clinical data that can help guide surgical management. With 3D breast models, surgeons are able to visually assess the size, shape, contour, and symmetry of the breast, as well as obtain quantitative breast measurements and volumetric calculations. Three-dimensional imaging may be applied to various plastic surgery procedures including breast reconstruction with implant/tissue expanders, local flap reconstruction, free-flap reconstruction, breast augmentation, and breast reduction surgery. The novel application of 3D imaging in these settings represents a significant advance from traditional approaches to aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery in which surgical procedures are based on 2-dimensional photographs and visual size estimates.

Modeling for Plastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgery

In this paper, we present the modeling and estimation aspects of a virtual reality system for plastic and reconstructive breast surgery. Our system has two modes, a model creation mode and a model tting mode. The model creation mode allows a surgeon to interactively adjust the shape of a virtual breast by varying key shape variables, analogous to the aesthetic and structural elements surgeons i...

Breast Augmentation and Breast Reconstruction Demonstrate Equivalent Aesthetic Outcomes

BACKGROUND There is a perception that cosmetic breast surgery has more favorable aesthetic outcomes than reconstructive breast surgery. We tested this hypothesis by comparing aesthetic outcomes after breast augmentation and reconstruction. METHODS Postoperative images of 10 patients (cosmetic, n = 4; reconstructive, n = 6; mean follow-up, 27 months) were presented anonymously to participants ...

Designing a virtual reality model for aesthetic surgery.

BACKGROUND Aesthetic surgery deals in large part with the manipulation of soft-tissue structures that are not amenable to visualization by standard technologies. As a result, accurate three-dimensional depictions of relevant surgical anatomy have yet to be developed. This study presents a method for the creation of detailed virtual reality models of anatomy relevant to aesthetic surgery. METH...

Mammometrics: the standardization of aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery.

The goal of cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery is to create symmetric and aesthetically pleasing results in a reproducible manner. Although continued progress is dependent on the ability of plastic surgeons to accurately assess surgical outcomes, available methods to objectively evaluate aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery are limited. This is quite different from other areas of...

Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma Associated with Breast Implant: A Case Report

Primary breast lymphoma represents less than 1% of all primary breast malignancies and most primary breast lymphomas are of B-Cell origin. The association of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL), a very rare form of primary breast lymphoma, with silicone-filled breast implants has been suggested and several case reports supported this proposal, especia...
